De Gea on his way out but replacement goalkeeper not a guarantee, talkSPORT told

first_imgDavid De Gea is already on his way to Real Madrid after Manchester United agree a €35m deal, Marca’s Juan Castro told talkSPORT.The transfer has dragged on all summer, so much so that Louis van Gaal refused to play De Gea this season, saying his mind was not in the right place. But Castro said the deal is done and will be made official in the next couple of hours.“Everything is almost done but nothing is confirmed by the club but we expect him to be a Real Madrid player by tomorrow,” he told Drivetime.“We expect an announcement in some hours and we even think David De Gea could already be travelling to Madrid.“There is an agreement but officially nothing is confirmed, I insist and the price will be €35m.”There have also been reports that current Real Madrid first-choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas will be included as part of the deal but Castro said that despite it making sense, is not necessarily the case.“We have no news about that but it could be because Keylor Navas cannot stay in Real Madrid,” Castro added.“He is no.1 at the moment but if David De Gea comes then he must go away and United needs a new keep and it could be him. We have nothing confirmed about that though.“The money is the only situation that was not agreed. They were fighting for the more money, MU want €40m and Real Madrid want to pay less. In the end it will be €35m but the disagreement was the fee of the transfers and nothing else.”last_img read more

Manchester United star to miss BOTH Euro 2016 qualifiers with Estonia and Lithuania

first_img Wayne Rooney 1 Wayne Rooney will miss England’s final Euro 2016 qualifier away to Lithuania on Monday as well as Friday’s clash with Estonia at Wembley, manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed. The captain has a minor ankle injury and Hodgson said he would be “devastated” should the Manchester United striker exacerbate the problem while on international duty.“It’s settling down very, very well,” Hodgson said of the injury at a press conference.“But we don’t want to risk him tomorrow. He’s got lots of important Manchester United games ahead and I would be devastated if we pushed him out there and something happened to increase the problem with the ankle, so we’ve decided it’s better if he doesn’t play in this game.”Hodgson also revealed Rooney would not make the trip to Lithuania, saying: “The important thing now is for Wayne to recover from this minor injury and to be fully fit the next time Manchester United play Saturday week.”Chelsea defender Gary Cahill will captain England in Rooney’s absence.last_img read more

Listen to Stan Collymore’s rant as he criticises Aston Villa’s ‘gutless’ performance against Arsenal

first_imgtalkSPORT’s Stan Collymore has criticised Aston Villa after the Premier League’s basement side were comfortably beaten 2-0 at home to Arsenal.Remi Garde’s struggling Villans, eight points from safety, lost for the eighth time in their last ten league outings and they look to be heading for the Championship.Sunday’s match was live on talkSPORT and Collymore, an Aston Villa fan and a player for three years, did not see much to be confident about in the Villa Park defeat.Collymore said: “Aston Villa: Gutless, spineless, it’s not about the quality of footballers – I saw yesterday on the south coast a Bournemouth side, and I keep talking about it, they rolled their sleeves up.“They started with an intensity that asks questions of the mighty Manchester United.“When you go in at that tempo and pace, but you can ask questions and things start to happen – they got the goal early on and went on to win the game.“This Aston Villa side – you see Per Mertesacker walking out of the back like Franz Beckenbauer, five, six touches. He may as well sit on the ball, no pressure.“Rudy Gestede, instead of chucking his arms by his side like Olivier Giroud – he hasn’t earned the right to do what Giroud has done, he has just scored 50+ goals for Arsenal – Gestede needs to start from the front and close down in those positions, in the right, the middle and the left and he needs the likes of [Scott] Sinclair to push up and close down with him.“If they don’t close down, they’re asking top-class players to pop the ball around them.”The former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool player also expressed his sympathy with the club’s fans, with over 30,000 turning out to watch their side in the West Midlands.Collymore added: “These people are paying their money to come and watch this.“A lot of Villa fans can’t stand me because their perception is that I did not do enough to take them on and win a Premier League title. I had two poor seasons here, but those poor seasons were beating Arsenal from 2-0 down to go to the top of the league, playing in the UEFA Cup quarter-final against Atletico Madrid and going on a club-record run.“So if they’re not going to have me, they are not going to have this for sure!“I have not seen as an inept working display – asking questions of the opposition – as this Aston Villa performance against this Arsenal team.“Make no mistake, if not there for the taking, Arsenal were there to be asked questions of and they haven’t.”last_img read more

Santa gets some local help

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREPettersson scores another winner, Canucks beat KingsAbout 50 people working out of the Whittier Community Center packed toys into bags and sacks so they could be taken away later that afternoon for distribution. There were about 12,000 blocks, more than 1,000 toy cars, trucks and other vehicles, 35 cradles and 20 baby strollers. “Most of us feel like little kids who need toys at Christmastime,” said John Rodgers, club president. “If we can do that we’re happy.” And the organizations getting these toys are thrilled. “We’re going to give them to the people in the community who are in need,” said Peggy Smith, recreation leader at Adventure County Park. “We’re thrilled to death,” Smith said. “They’re beautiful. They’re really like craft work. The items they’ve made are absolutely exquisite.” The Woodworkers of Whittier started about 15 years ago with the idea of making toys for children, Rodgers said. “If we can make them and spread some good feeling, we feel good,” he said. But instead of giving the wooden toys away themselves, they’ve found it easier to give to a variety of organizations, such as Los Angeles Fire and Sheriff’s departments, Whittier police, churches, and some local schools. The group has about 50 members, all of whom are woodworkers. The wood for the toys is donated by three companies: Pacific Architectural Millworks of La Habra, Renaissance Doors and Windows of Fullerton and Schroeder and Bogardus Die Co. of Anaheim. Terry Schroeder, owner of Schroeder and Bogardus Die Co., who brought his wife and three sons to help with the packing Wednesday, said he is impressed by the craftsmen. “It’s amazing,” Schroeder. “I can’t imagine the amount of time it takes to produce such a beautiful product. They have to cut it, sand it and paint it.” The latter (painting) is done by women at the Whittier Senior Center. Jane Agee, one of the 25 woman painters, said the time spent is enjoyable. “It’s kind of fun,” she said. “We can talk while we paint.” mike.sprague@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3022 ——— To see a video, log on to: www.whittierdailynews.com160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Switzerland boss warns Leicester’s Inler he faces Euro 2016 omission

first_imgSwitzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic has told skipper Gokhan Inler he must force his way into Leicester’s title-chasing team if he wants to go to the Euro 2016 finals. The 31-year-old midfielder will play no part against either the Republic of Ireland or Bosnia in his country’s friendlies over the Easter weekend after being left out of the squad for the first time in ten years.Inler has fallen from grace after making just 10 appearances and only three Barclays Premier League starts for the Foxes following his £5million summer arrival from Napoli, and with Claudio Ranieri’s men five points clear at the top of the table, the chances of him breaking into the side look remote. However, that is the challenge from Petkovic. He said: “It was not an easy decision to leave out a player with 90 caps, but it was a decision of the moment and it was a decision taken by me for the benefit of the team.“I spoke to Gokhan about this and a lot of people in the club as well, and they all know if the situation changes, if he plays more than he has been doing recently, there is still a possibility he will join the team again.“This is not only for Gokhan Inler, that is the idea for any other player. I want them to make it difficult for me to make decisions for Euro 2016.“If Inler is in full shape, he can contribute a lot to the team and all the players have got used to having him around.“But there is always a chance for other players to show themselves and to take over part of his role. That’s how football goes.”Asked if Inler regretted his decision to join Leicester, Petkovic added: “It’s not important to look back.“At this moment, he needs to focus on tomorrow and on today. You have to do today everything you can to be better tomorrow, and that’s what’s important for Gokhan Inler right now.”Like the bulk of Petkovic’s players, Inler is playing – or in his case, not playing – abroad, with Germany, Italy, England and Greece among their adopted homes. That is of benefit in as much as it allows the players to gain experience of different types of football, although the coach revealed it has its drawbacks too.He said: “The advantage of this situation is the players have the opportunity to learn a lot. They can cope with different styles of playing – that’s very good for the team.“The disadvantage is I have to travel a lot and I got a cold when I was in England the last time.” Gokhan Inler, who has 90 caps, was left out of their recent squad for the first time in ten years 1last_img read more

Louis van Gaal reveals if any players want to leave Manchester United

first_img1 Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal Louis van Gaal believes no Manchester United players will be pushing to leave Old Trafford this summer, even if the club do not qualify for the Champions League. The Red Devils are currently four points behind local rivals Manchester City, who occupy the last Champions League qualifying spot.History has made it clear that writing off United is a foolish move, but at this stage of the campaign, it appears as if Van Gaal’s men will be turning out in the Europa League next term, rather than Europe’s premier competition.Considering some of the players in United’s squad have the ability to feature for Europe’s top sides, losing key players is a real fear for the Red Devils if they are to miss out on the Champions League. However, Van Gaal is not worried about such a situation happening, confirming that no players are forcing an exit from Old Trafford.“There is not any player who wants to go away, I think,” the Dutchman said.“And when another club wants to pay the figures that the board of Manchester United demand, then it is possible.“But that is dependent on the board, of the decision of the board if a player can go.”David de Gea is one of the players constantly linked with a transfer, and he came extremely close to signing for Real Madrid last summer. The La Liga giants are expected to renew their interest in the Spanish goalkeeper at the end of this campaign, but Van Gaal has refused to be drawn on his future. The 64-year-old added: “You have said that he is going to Real Madrid. I have said always that he stays. You remember that?“And now you are asking how long he has to stay? Come on. First you have to say: ‘Okay, sorry that I have written that. Sorry.’“Ask him, ask him. Maybe he said something about that. But not to me.”last_img read more

England training session gate-crashed as member of public intrudes

first_imgEngland’s first training session ahead of Euro 2016 was gate-crashed by a member of the public, just days after the Old Trafford security scare.Roy Hodgson’s squad, minus those involved in the Europa League and FA Cup finals, were taking a break from a practice match when a man, seemingly in his early to mid-20s and wearing England training gear, ran on to the pitch. His presence caused minimal drama among the players, who did not appear concerned by, or perhaps aware, of his presence, as he was allowed to enter and leave the pitch without alerting security staff. The interloper did nothing more threatening than aim a couple of wayward strikes at an unguarded net but coming just days after the abandonment of Manchester United’s Premier League match with Bournemouth, and on the eve of the European Championship, this was an unwanted episode. The Football Association has promised action against the individual in a statement released to Press Association Sport.“The person in question was the son of an invited Club Wembley member who had to follow a formal registration process on entry to St George’s Park,” a spokesperson said.“The FA were aware of his identity and we will take appropriate action in due course as a result of this unacceptable behaviour.”The incident occurred midway through an hour-long training session at St George’s Park, where media watched the session alongside Club Wembley members. The individual took to the field during a drinks break, entering the field from the same stand as invited spectators – appearing to avoid the attention of security staff. Some of the players and coaching staff noticed him sprinting in their direction but did not appear flustered. His intentions remained unclear as he kicked a couple of loose balls towards an empty net and walked off again.Stewards by now appeared to have been alerted to the situation and grabbed the intruder as he returned to the stand. It is an unwelcome episode in the build-up to a tournament when the safety of fans and players is already a hot topic.November’s attacks in Paris involved explosions outside the Stade de France, which will host the Euro 2016 final, and were followed by the Brussels bombings in March, heightening fears the tournament could be targeted.England boss Hodgson, in the wake of Sunday’s incident at Old Trafford, said he was hopeful of the competition passing without incident, as was left-back Ryan Bertrand.“No, not really,” he said when asked if he was worried about security.“I’m sure people in charge of that will do their job correctly and thoroughly. I’m fully focused on enjoying the tournament.” 1 The England coaching staff watch on at St George’s Park last_img read more
