Postdoctoral Associate

first_imgJob DescriptionThe increased cost and effort required for monitoring catastrophicdisturbances in southeastern forests has led to a need for improvedtools for rapid, accurate assessment of timber damage caused bytropical storm systems. A Postdoctoral Associate is being sought tocollaborate with Virginia Tech faculty and U.S. Forest Serviceresearchers to pursue advances in model-assisted disturbanceestimation methods that leverage data from satellite and aerialremote sensing along with post-hurricane field surveys coordinatedthrough the Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA)program. The selected participant will pursue research evaluating anumber of competing data sources for suitability in modeldevelopment, identifying tradeoffs in temporal, spatial, or sensorinformation where different data sources provide informationcorrelated with different storm-damage related variables ofinterest. The project participant will develop expertise in workingwith large data sets to answer questions relevant to forestmanagement and policy in one of the world’s most actively managedforest ecosystems, as well as sharing findings with otherscientists and a range of stakeholders at conferences andprofessional meetings.Under the guidance of a small team of faculty supervisors andmentors, the selected participant will further their professionaldevelopment by (a) in-depth study of a dynamic and societallyimportant regional forest management challenge, (b) gainingexperience with decision support for forest timber and carbonassessment and management at multiple scales, (c) furtheringcollective understanding of complex natural resource management andpolicy challenges in the U.S. Southeast, (d) pursuit of researchthrough to publication at the intersection of natural resourcemanagement and carbon dynamics in managed and unmanagedforests.Required Qualifications- A Ph.D. in natural resources, forestry, remote sensing, or othersuitable discipline with emphasis on the application of statisticsto problems involving multiple data sets from extensive fieldsurveys and remote sensing. PhD awarded no more than four yearsprior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of oneyear eligibility remaining.- Demonstrated skills in working with large datasets from multiplesources, including publicly-available data from sources such asairborne and/or spaceborne remote-sensing platforms to field surveydata such as those conducted as part of national forestInventories.- Excellent spoken and written English language skills, with ademonstrated ability to deliver technical information to peeraudiences in spoken or written English.- Experience with technical writing, especially in publishingresearch findings in peer-reviewed English-languagepublications.- Experience or aptitude in working in high-performance computingplatforms/environments such as Linux and applications/languagessuch as R or Python.Preferred QualificationsPreferred qualifications and interests for the ideal applicantinclude:- ability to review and synthesize scientific literature fromfields of forest biometrics, geomatics, and appliedstatistics;-strong analysis skills, including the ability to develop, document, and implement procedures for working with large datasetsin a scientific-computing environment;- ability to focus on research goals that inform policy-relatedgoals and management decisions; – experience in technical andscientific writing and reporting; and- a strong willingness to work in a collaborative environment thatspans academic, agency, and private-sector cooperators.Appointment TypeRestrictedSalary InformationCommensurate with experienceReview DateFebruary 1, 2021Additional InformationThe successful Candidate will be required to have a criminalconviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve),Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking ahands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to beleaders and problem-solvers.
